Children
Dr. Stewart treats the oral health of his youngest patients — toddlers, children and teens — with knowledge and insight into their unique needs. As part of this program, the practice offers preventative, restorative and cosmetic services and orthodontic referrals. The trained staff and doctors create a child-friendly environment that will make your child's visit as stress-free as possible. The practice begins seeing children at the age of three.
Although the staff is skilled at calming the anxious or fearful child, it is important that parents not create stress prior to the visit by using words like "shot," "needle," "drill" or "hurt." The trained staff will explain the procedures to children in terms they can understand that do not create undue concern. The less made of the impending visit, the better.
With toddlers and children, it is very important to maintain the health of the "baby" or primary teeth. The four front primary teeth last until the ages of six or seven while the back teeth are not replaced until ten to thirteen years of age. The reason for starting visits to the dentist at a young age is that neglected cavities may lead to problems with developing permanent teeth. If needed, fluoride treatments in primary and permanent teeth strengthen teeth and prevent decay. Primary teeth also provide space for permanent teeth and guide them into the correct position. In addition, they permit normal development of the jaw and muscles and affect the development of speech.
Oral hygiene instruction given by the staff promotes good oral health and forms the basis of healthy teeth for life. Proper brushing and flossing (yes, children should floss daily) protects young teeth and establishes life-long good habits. Dr. Stewart and the staff consult and advise parents about their child's oral health and development.
